Dr. James Downing is the president and CEO of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a nonprofit medical corporation committed to advancing cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. St. Jude was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas in 1962 with the vision that no child be denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.
Dr. Downing, a Detroit native, earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Michigan. After training in anatomic pathology at Washington University in St. Louis and completing a fellowship in hematopathology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Dr. Downing joined St. Jude in 1986. He became scientific director and executive vice president in 2004, and deputy director in 2011. He was named the hospital’s sixth CEO in 2014. Dr. Downing was a key figure in launching the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project, which made TIME Magazine’s 2012 list of top 10 medical breakthroughs. Among his many honors include the Association for Molecular Pathology’s Award for Excellence in Molecular Diagnostics. In 2013, Dr. Downing was elected to the Institute of Medicine, a branch of the National Academy of Sciences.
